2006
- The NC Latino Coalition supported a statewide strategy that included marches and rallies in response to the punitive immigration legislation currently being considered by Congress.
- Leaders of the NC Latino Coalition met both with the NC Secretary of Health and with the NC president of the Community College System to follow up on commitments made to leaders in 2005.
- Leaders organized a meeting with the editorial board of the News and Observer newspaper after several very negative articles about immigrants appear for a week in their Sunday edition. An agreement about a more balanced coverage was made.
- The NC Latino Coalition worked in partnership with other IAF networks in North Carolina to organize a statewide seminar on the impact of Immigration in North Carolina. The seminar involved 110 immigrants, Anglos and African Americans from 30 North Carolina Counties as well as funders and religious leaders. The seminar provided an opportunity for a broad multi-racial base of leaders to discuss the impact of immigration in their communities and to make plans for further local action in their communities. Coalition leaders are currently coordinating community forums at 7 other locations throughout the state.
2005
- Over 1,200 grassroots Latinos in different areas of the state have participated in community organizing training
- Grassroots leaders have participated in group meetings with their elected and appointed officials at the local, state and federal level.
- Member grassroots organizations have agreed to a decision making process, shared values and decision-making process.
- The Coalition developed a culture of Latino groups working and planning together.
- In October 2005, one thousand leaders from across the state participated on the NC Latino Coalition Delegates Assembly. Four North Carolina Bishops, several influential business leaders, several members of Congress, and diverse decision makers attended the Assembly. Decision makers included Federal Senior Investigator for the Office of Civil Rights, Attorney for the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Chief of the Labor Department's Agricultural Safety and Health Bureau, and representatives from the State board of the NC Community College System.
- Decision makers made public commitments during the Delegates Assembly included 1) public support of Comprehensive Immigration reform by four members of Congress, 2) reform of the labor camp inspection strategy used by NC Department of Labor, 3) Request from Office of Civil Rights to local health departments, clinics, and hospitals to hire bilingual and bi-cultural personnel in 100 Counties, 4) partnership between Community College system and immigrant organizations throughout the state.
2004
- NC Latino Coalition organized and sponsored a three-day community organizing training involving 95 grassroots Latino leaders of organizations in North Carolina.
- We provided organizing technical assistance to 57 grassroots Latino organizations active in 32 counties.
- 800 Latino members of the Coalition participated at statewide delegates assembly of NC United Power (in partnership with IAF North Carolina). The total number of participants was 1,400 and several elected officials attended the event.
- 80 grassroots Latinos from different parts of the state participated at End Poverty event sponsored by NC Council of Churches.
2003
- NC Latino Coalition initiated our coalition building process by bringing together thirty-five grassroots Latino organizations from different parts of the state for a strategic planning process.
